Sadhana Study
The Sanskrit word sadhana refers to the path of a person’s yoga practice. Each sadhana is different because each life is unique. As we develop skills and refine our understanding of the path of yoga, the nature of our own personal sadhana begins to take form. Sadhana is not static but a dynamic force that responds to our evolving conditions, needs, and longings. To understand our own sadhana and to know how to modify it is to be truly empowered on the yogic journey.
This class is designed to be a well of nourishment, a place for students of yoga to come together, immerse in subtle practices and share notes on our studies. We welcome complete beginners, longtime practitioners, and anyone in between to enjoy Sadhana Study.
Each class follows a four-part structure:
Self-Directed Physical Practice (20min)
We’ll begin class by tending to the physical body without external instruction. You’re welcome to do gentle practices, restorative postures, or more active forms of asana — the idea here is to develop the ability to listen to the body’s needs, and to respond skillfully.
Sound and Mantra (20min)
Enjoy guided practices of sound toning and chanting Sanskrit mantra. Toning the creation of non-linguistic sounds uses sound vibration to soothe the body and release tension in the breath, heart, and mind. Sanskrit mantra is a beautiful yogic technology for focusing the mind, refining the precision of our attention, and deepening our understanding of the spiritual philosophy carried by these ancient traditions. We will take our time to learn meanings and pronunciation, patiently deepening our relationship with a handful of mantras over time.
Pranayama (20min)
Here, we will explore guided breathing and visualization practices intended to foster a calm mind and deep stability within the energy body. We will rely on foundational techniques that are accessible to new students while also detailing the dimensions of the practices to challenge those with more experience.
Conversation (30min)
Let's share notes! The floor will be open for questions and reflections. We can move into deeper discussions about the content of the class, or discuss larger dimensions of life that we are working with: obstacles and challenges, confusion, developing realizations. The vast well of yogic wisdom will be called upon to help us contextualize our experiences and provide inspiration for the adventures that await us.
