Vinyasa is a dynamic flow-style class with an emphasis on breath and balancing steadiness and ease in your body, mind, and soul. Practitioners will build strength, gain flexibility, and improve balance. Customizations will always be offered and encouraged as practitioners explore alignment suitable for their individual needs. This class will offer physical and mental challenges, skillful alignment, and will be supported by an essential intention or bhavana. These classes are geared toward most levels of practice, and more complex asanas, including arm balances and inversions will be offered.

Dante Baker

Dante Baker has been a native to the Washington DC area his entire life, growing up in Reston, VA. Since his childhood years, Dante has always had a fascination with the human anatomy and all of its abilities to heal, move, and process. This interest led Dante to studying and receiving a variety of personal training and massage therapy certifications. Through Dante’s own personal life experience and the influence of family and peers, he embarked on a journey that would ultimately move him in the direction of providing health on a more holistic level. In 2011, Dante was introduced to transcendental meditation by Dr. Mahapatra Gyanendra one of the personal physicians of the Mararishi meditation course. This practice shined a light on his own inner stillness that he never experienced before at that time.

Dante was fascinated by the Eastern philosophies such as Chinese medicine and enrolled in a nine month Qi Gong and Tai Chi Ball certification with Master Nianzu Li (L.Ac) in 2013. He went on to strengthen his Qi Gong practice and began to teach personal clients as well as larger classes at various health studios.  The passion to discover different modalities of holistic health lead him to discover Singing Bowls and Tibetan bowl in 2013. By linking up with different yoga instructors like Atticus Mooley, he integrated singing bowls into yoga classes as a unique way to allow students to find deeper levels of meditation during savasana.  Being a part of many different yoga classes inspired him to take a 200-hour Yoga certification from SOYA(Canada) in January of 2016. As a E-RYT 200 Yoga Instructor, Dante holds CEU courses around the D.C Metropolitan area teaching other yoga instructors how to play sacred instruments and use their voice to create vibratory frequencies that promotes wellness.

For Dante, Yoga is much more than just a form of exercise; it is a path that opens the doors to explore the mind, body and spirit. Students in Dante’s class are directed to stay focus on creating proper alignment within the asana and to consciously relax into each posture. Challenging asanas are suggested but never forced upon anyone, and modifications are always demonstrated to ensure that everyone can participant no matter what level they are at. At the end of class, students leave feeling physically restored and mentally rejuvenated.

Maryam Ovissi

Maryam Ovissi, Trauma-Informed Yoga Therapist & Yoga Teacher

C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, RCYT, RPYT, YACEP

"Yoga is a proven system and philosophy that provides tools for the individual to develop a self-care routine that meets them where they are. As a teacher, I am only the guide.”

~Maryam Ovissi

This philosophy is the foundation of Maryam Ovissi’s approach to wellbeing and has guided her through more than two decades of work in the yoga and health industry. Maryam is the founder of Beloved Yoga, a studio and wellness center operating in Northern Virginia since 2005. Her vision for making Yoga accessible for all came to fruition in February 2018, with the opening of the flagship location of Beloved Yoga: A Sanctuary for All, a serene, safe, multi-studio space in Reston, Virginia. Maryam’s passion for sharing the original teachings of Yoga with reverence, integrity and accessibility for all is what motivates her to be of service to the Yoga commUnity.

Maryam is a certified Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) and under the tutelage of Bhekaji Lynch, she received her 500-hour Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) accreditation with Yoga Alliance. Maryam’s personal mission as a teacher of Yoga is to provide an opportunity for her students to have access to tools that allow self-healing, self-empowerment and self-realization. Her unique style provides space for multi-level practitioners to journey through Yoga in group, semi-private and private classes. In her private Yoga teaching, Yogic tools are offered that serve the person and their personal intentions.

“Transforming trauma into teachers is one of the greatest secrets for discovering peace and happiness in this life. In my opinion, Yoga is one of the most effective tools to support this transformation. “ ~Maryam Ovissi

Moved by the declining mental and physical health statistics of Americans today, Maryam created Beloved Yoga’s signature Befriending Yoga Therapy program to offer classes that serve a range of clients and a variety of health conditions. Trauma-informed teachers offer private and semi-private classes designed for a variety of health issues including lower back pain, hip and knee replacements, spinal fusions, invasive surgeries, traumatic physical injuries, chronic conditions, emotional stress and mental imbalances from cognitive to stress-induced confusion. Maryam’s specialties in trauma lie in her experience with medical trauma, including invasive surgeries, cancer and all the layers of treatment around cancer, as well as complex medical conditions that create medical trauma. Maryam co-developed Befriend the Journey with Cancer with Anu Kaur.

Maryam received a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Arts Management from Boston University in 1998, and soon thereafter she became an avid student of Yoga. She began studying privately with her first teacher, Simin Yahaghi, in California. Maryam has been teaching Hatha, Hatha Flow, Vinyasa, Prenatal and Baby & Me classes since 2001. She honors the lineage and teachings of Sri Krishnamacharya through her principle teachers, the Mohan Family. Maryam upholds the principle that the Yoga practice is a personal and individual journey and not a one-size-fits-all practice. Although A.G. & Indra Mohan, Dr. Ganesh Mohan, Bhekaji Lynch continue to serve as her main teachers, she claims nothing can replace the gifts and wisdom born forth by showing up for herself every day through Sadhana (personal practice). She stays committed to the path of the student.

Recognizing the need for teachers who offer safe instruction and instill the ancient teachings of Yoga, Maryam founded the Beloved Yoga School in 2008 to offer teacher training programs. Under the guidance of Maryam, the Beloved Yoga School offers Yoga Alliance registered trainings and Approved Professional Development programs by IAYT, including a 200-hour teacher training, a 300-hour advanced teacher training, a prenatal teacher training, and the Beloved Yoga Certification Program: Trauma-Informed Yoga, Pranayama & Yin. The Beloved Yoga School meets the standards set by Yoga Alliance and is a member school of the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Maryam’s love expands to embrace the creative spirit. She serves on the board of the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art and the Southgate Community Center and is on the Advisory Board of the Gender and Policy Center, George Mason University. Maryam makes time to explore creativity in her own life through writing poetry and mark making. She released Soundscapes to Contemplate, a compilation CD of her poetry set to conscious electronic mantra music by artist and producer Saeed Younan. In 2020, she published Care of the Whole Self: Yoga Inspired Tools to Befriend the Self. Visit her website to learn more: maryamovissi.com

Alyson Maclatchy

Aly believes that yoga wakes us up! Yoga invites us to embrace ourselves as whole beings while encouraging us to refine; always. It is the way we engage with everything that informs and empowers the way we live. She also believes deeply in the medicine inherent in the natural world that is accessible by simply paying attention.

Aly received her 200 hour certification through Frog Lotus International Yoga School under Vidya Heisel. She completed a 72 hour anatomy intensive from the Anatomy School for Yoga Teachers in New York under Jason Brown. Aly will always consider herself first and foremost a student of yoga and of being a teacher of yoga. She attends classes, workshops, intensives, and trainings whenever possible. Her teaching continues to be influenced by teachers like Marni Sclaroff, Tara Judelle, Elena Brower, Tiffany Cruikshank, and Darren Rhodes.

As a teacher, Aly intends to create a safe space that encourages practitioners to have an experience of themselves. Her classes are intelligently sequenced and infused with intention, breath awareness, body alignment, and lots of smiles.

You will most likely find Aly in the woods, dancing, studying “green witcheries”, meditating, or being a goofball with her son, Tommy. Visit Aly online at www.gratefullyrooted.com.

Stephanie Baird

At the start, Yoga was a purely physical practice for Stephanie. It wasn't until she found Beloved Yoga in 2009 that she began to know the full depth of the practice. She completed her 200HR teacher training at Beloved in 2016. She mentored with Alyson MacLatchy and discovered the joy of sharing her Yoga practice with fellow practitioners. Maryam Ovissi continues to be a major influence on her teaching style and an inspiration in general.

Stephanie teaches a strenuous flow style of Yoga where the focus is on aligning breath with slow movements, holding asanas and moving with awareness. She truly believes that there is a Yoga class that will suit every person and that Yoga can help each practitioner find the tools they need to live in harmony with their body, their mind and their emotions. She often counsels practitioners to try multiple styles of Yoga until they find the one that resonates deeply in them.

Yoga is not a practice for the flexible, it is a practice to gain flexibility in the body and resiliency in the mind.

Stephanie also loves exploring the world with her family through travel, food, hiking, books and film.

Allison Caras

Allison Caras, PhD, has been on the yoga path for about 20 years and believes she has only begun to scratch the surface. She approaches the practice with humility, reverence and a playful curiosity and offers classes in the same way. Students are provided with space and time to tap into the present, explore, and challenge themselves.

Allison is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT500) with Yoga Alliance. She completed the 200-hour yoga teacher training at Yoga District in Washington, DC, and the 300-hour yoga teacher and yoga therapy foundations training here at Beloved Yoga. She also holds a PhD in Spanish Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University and went on to teach at The George Washington University. During the pandemic, she decided to leave academia and start her own company to promote workday wellness and self-care practices to teachers, professional organizations and corporations. Although she left language teaching and linguistic research behind, she is still passionate about languages and how they can foster human connection and self-reflection. As a yoga teacher, she imagines painting with words as she guides students through their practice.

Kate Finkelstein

Kate Finkelstein began practicing yoga after an injury prevented her from pursuing her passion for distance-running. Kate was first attracted to the seemingly endless challenges a physical yoga practice offers and soon became aware that a regular yoga practice also offers concrete mental and emotional direction and support. She believes that her yoga practice helps her be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and whole person.

Kate completed her 200-hour certification at Beloved Yoga with Jafar Alexander, Sharra Cielo, and Maryam Ovissi. In her classes, Kate offers practitioners the opportunity to explore the strengths they already have and to become curious about all the possibilities they carry within themselves.

Amélie Gislot

Amélie is a French mom who moved to the USA in 2018. After a decade of trying to conceive with the assistance of hormonal treatments, she decided to attend a yoga retreat. Upon returning home her body re-established its natural rhythms and a month later, she was pregnant. Since that transformative experience, she has continued practicing yoga through pregnancies, postpartum challenges, and even postpartum depression. Yoga has been her constant companion, whether practiced alone or with her children, whenever she can find a moment amid the whirlwind of motherhood. Her goal is to help others find balance and strength in their lives through the power of yoga.

As a certified yoga instructor and fitness professional, she is deeply committed to promoting the mind-body connection and supporting others on their personal journeys. She holds certifications in 200-hour yoga teacher training, 85-hour prenatal yoga teacher training, and a 20-hour postpartum yoga teacher training.
