Yoga is a practice of connection. For many students who are neurodivergent or have cognitive developmental delays, a standard studio class can feel inaccessible and often overwhelming, leading to a stressful practice. The Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training prepares teachers, educators, therapists, parents, and caregivers to support yoga practice for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, sensory and proprioception challenges, Down Syndrome, and select co-morbidities.

This curriculum focuses on shifting one’s perspective on how yoga is taught and received. Our focus is on creating an understanding the yoga participant as one individual, personal and knowledge-based teacher preparation, moving beyond asana adaptation, developing sensitivity with language and terminology, and building confidence as a teacher.

In this tailored training, the broadest scope of learning is applied to the following topics:

• neuro-affirming practices: learning to create a safe and supportive

• environment, including environmental factors

• thoughtful sequencing: preventing sensory overload within the environment

• class approach using props and other tools

• communication skill development through the use of communication devices

• letter boards, and language practice to promote inclusion and connection

• pranayama (breathwork) and mindfulness practices

• trauma-informed skills relating to breathwork and how to create stillness

We will use the SVASTHA Wellness Model to inform “whole person” inclusion. This unique and highly developed model is paramount to respecting and understanding all persons, and especially informs the teaching of self-regulation, environmental stressors, and how they inform the yoga student.

Caregivers and therapists address the “hidden” emotions and daily lives of yoga students and what they bring to the mat when they arrive. Children, teens and adults: adapting the practice to your population through the use of various props, storytelling sequences, playful and interactive yoga games, and using age-appropriate approaches.

Note: Adult yogis currently participating in adaptive yoga classes will be invited to the studio for a practice session. This may alter when the core subject material will be presented. Thank you for being flexible.
