Join Joelle Van Over for a full weekend to explore spinal health. The weekend will unfold on Friday night with a class focused on how to intentionally invite spinal awareness into the practice. In Yoga, we drive towards postural health and believe so much of our journey of well-being depends on not only the stability and strength of our core and spine as well as the mobility and fluidity of the entire spine and the supporting muscles and fascia. Come explore a full weekend to learn the essentials from anatomy to imbalances.

Friday, December 5, 2025, 6-8 pm (Spinal Health - Friday PM)

Master Class on Integrating an Awareness of Spinal Health into our Yoga Practices

Key foundational elements of the spine’s structure and function include the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, joints, ligaments, the layered muscles of the back, fascia, and the natural curves of the spine that support the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spines.

A spine and core-centered yoga practice to increase awareness of these principles to develop confident, safe practices, and to understand the importance of adaptations.

Saturday, December 6, 2025, 10 am to 1 pm (Spinal Health - Saturday AM)

The Structural and Functional Anatomy of the Spine

A deeper dive into the architecture and function of our spine, and the unique characteristics of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine and how they affect functional movement.

Our yoga practice will focus on integrating our understanding of the muscles that support the spine in movement, both directly and indirectly, and on adapting our practices to nourish spinal health.

Saturday, December 6, 2 pm-5 pm (Spinal Health - Saturday PM)

Spinal Health is Intrinsically Related to Postural Health

How posture directly and indirectly affects spinal health and most areas of our body. Posture is a full-body experience that affects the balance and health of the spine.

We will practice with an attitude of gently becoming aware of the essence of the expression of a posture or movement in our unique bodies, and then attending to range and additional subtle adaptations or tuning of a posture to create stability, and to integrate and support the spinal mobility expressed in our posture or movement, including awareness of our breath and core activation.

Sunday, December 7, 10 am-1 pm (Spinal Health - Sunday AM)

Functional Imbalances May Affect the Spine and its Structure

We will review key muscular imbalances not directly part of the spine that may affect spinal health and function, including chronically tight hamstrings and the effect on the pelvis and lumbar spine, and chronic shoulder tightness, including the upper trapezius and neck muscles, which over time may affect the health of the cervical spine and restrict movement.

Sunday, December 7, 2-5 pm (Spinal Health - Sunday PM)

Being Alert to Pain and Disorders/Conditions that Affect the Spinal Structure

It is estimated that low back pain or discomfort will affect at least 85% of those living in the United States, with similar estimates worldwide by the World Health Organization. Low back pain may be acute and temporary, chronic or episodic. Some organizations estimate that the cause of low back pain is identified in only 10-15% of those suffering from low back pain.

(PLEASE NOTEThis workshop is not refundable, but it is transferable. If you cannot attend, please contact admin@belovedyoga.com before December 5th for account credit.)

Joelle is an E-RYT 500 hour and YACEP from Yoga Alliance, and holds an C-IAYT certification from the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and received her 800 hour  therapeutic yoga practitioner training at Beloved Yoga. She is excited by structural and functional anatomy and the Krishnamacharya, Desikachar,  Mohan linage, is inspired by Peter Marchand, and has many hours of advanced training in these traditions. Joelle loves her private teaching where she collaboratively creates individual practices designed to meet the needs and goals of each student. She also loves the energy of her classes and sharing a joyful practice integrating alignment, movement and breath to find strength, flexibility and greater balance within each practice. Joelle believes that everyone comes to the mat with everything they need to experience yoga fully and to progress on their own journey, experiencing ease, stability and joy along the way. Sharing this path, and simply being present to the beauty in each day motivates her teaching. Reading ancient yoga texts and philosophy is an anchor for Joelle, as she finds joy in deepening her own practice so that she may share more fully on and off the mat. Joelle is grateful to the many teachers who guide her and looks forward to sharing with many more. Joelle has practiced yoga and meditation for over 30 years and is always awed by its teachings and how every practice is new and lifts us in our daily lives. Joelle loves to connect with her son and daughter, loves the companionship of her loving dog, Luna, and nature always absorbs her in awe and wonder.  She is grateful for her mountaineering, rock climbing and kayaking experiences.
